For my Final Major Project I will base my theme on Culture. I will look at the three cultures of Africa, Egypt and India and produce one final final garment that will have these elements combined.

For part of my unit 10 in college I have to produce a portfolio of work including some of my best work throughout my two years studying ND Fashion and Clothing. 

My Portfolio of work will also be what I will take to my University interviews to show how I work as a Fashion student and the quality of work I am producing.

Having attended both of my University interviews and had my portfolio of work reviewed and analyzed, I have been given Conditional placements by both Salford University and UCLAN (University of Central Lancashire). Due to the atmosphere, facilities and humble welcoming I was given from Salford University I have accepted their offer and will be attending there in September.

Modern Masters Article

For my Modern masters brief I had chosen to recreate Gustav Klimt’s “Adele Bloch-Bauer I” as my own contemporary version. From researching different photographers such as Peter Lindbergh and Rohit Chawla this inspired and guided me to how I would produce my own photo shoot.

I have always had a particular liking in Klimts work due to the rich tones of colour he injects into his pieces, alongside the abstract essence which is conveyed within his paintings and also the use of intricate embellishment which consists in some of his pieces.

Klimt took three years to complete the painting. It measures 138 x 138 cm and is made of oil and gold on canvas, showing elaborate and complex ornamentation as seen in the Jugendstil style. Klimt was a member of theVienna Secession, a group of artists that broke away from the traditional way of painting. The picture was painted in Vienna and commissioned by Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer. As a wealthy industrialist who had made his fortune in the sugar industry, he sponsored the arts and favoured and supported Gustav Klimt. Adele Bloch-Bauer became the only model who was painted twice by Klimt when he completed a second picture of her, Adele Bloch-Bauer II, in 1912.

Klimts painting is an inspiration to what I would want my brand to be like due to the elegance, tones of colour and texture within the painting. All of which I like to inject when I have created my garments for this project and previous projects. Also researching fashion illustrators as shown on my blog have inspired me with my own brand as I feel I now have my own unique style when fashion drawing which is to draw quite intricate and precise.

My initial task was to produce a recreation of Klimt’s Adele Bloch-Bauer as a contemporary, modern version, yet hold onto certain aspects from the original image. I feel I have achieved this as I have kept the tones of colour as relevant as possible to the original image and my model is replicating the same pose as Adele in the original. It is a lot more contemporary however due to the style of the dress and is less reserved as my garment is more revealing from the shoulders, which therefore shows my modern twist.

For my garment I used two meters of copper brown satin and two meters of gold shimmered veil. I sewn these materials together and finally attached straps to the dress which wrapped around the neck as a halter neck which also given the image of a necklace as shown in the original image. When it came to the photo shoot I used a white booth which my model stood in while I took the pictures.The images came out better than I expected due to the correct lighting and positioning which made it easier to edit in to my background on Photoshop.

Overall I am very pleased with my final image as it does portray the theme, “Classic with a Twist”. Although I have achieved a more contemporary version of Klimt’s “Adele Bloch-Bauer”, I have captured a similar mood and held onto certain aspects from the original image. I have enjoyed being given the task of producing a photo shoot although if I was to improve I would tweak certain areas further on my final image.

Printing

For some of my projects I have produced a few prints which has gained my experience using a different media and using different materials to create a unique and original design or drawing. The image above is a print I produced called, Dry point. This process includes drawing directly on a metal plate with a steel needle, creating a furrow and a rough burr which holds the ink and gives the printed line a velvety quality, as you can see from my print above.
